Make every day count in 2016
Make every day count in 2016
‘Read your Bible, pray every day if you want to grow.’ That children’s song simply sums up how you can make every day count. Daily devotionals are essential for conquering in life and for your development as a fruitful disciple and faith filled leader.
Jesus taught us to pray to our Heavenly Father for daily bread. He showed us that we overcome the temptations of life by our memorisation, quotation and application of what is written in the Word of God.
In the Old Testament the busy statesman Daniel found time to pray three times a day. The military commander Joshua was told that he would be ‘prosperous and successful’ if he meditated on God’s word ‘day and night’ and was careful to obey it.
The apostles gave their ‘attention to prayer and the ministry of the Word.’
Daily private devotionals have been the foundation of my own life and public ministry. I hope this guide helps you to develop the disciplines and delights of your own daily walk with the Lord.

The Bible is not one book but a library of 66 books; 39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament.
Both Testaments share common themes, and the whole Bible points to the saviour of the world, Jesus Christ. The Old Testament is a prelude to the coming of the Messiah, while the New Testament reveals the Messiah to us.
The Bible was written over a period of 1,500 years by at least 40 authors from different world empires including kings, scholars, philosophers, fishermen, poets, prophets, historians and doctors. All of these have a common thread, inspired by God; written by man. The Bible remains as true and relevant today as it has been throughout history.
The Bible has been banned and burned, ridiculed and rejected but today it is still the world’s bestselling book, with an estimated 1,250,000 copies sold each year in the UK. YouVersion’s Bible app has been downloaded over 100 million times, and on average 66,000 people open the app every second. The Bible can change your life every day.
1. The Bible is the inspired word of God
2 Timothy 3:16: ‘All Scripture is God-breathed.’
2. The Bible is relevant for every situation
2 Timothy 3:16: ‘All Scripture…is useful for teaching,
rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness’.
3. The Bible is a treasure store of wisdom
Psalm 119:98: ‘Your commands are always with me and make me wiser than my enemies.’
4. The Bible has great power
Hebrews 4:12: ‘For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow;it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.’
5. The Bible will give you a God centred worldview
Daniel 6:26-27: ‘For he is the living God and he endures for ever; his kingdom will never be destroyed, his dominion will never end. He rescues and he saves; he performs signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth.’
6. The Bible will teach you how to live right
Micah 6:8: ‘He has shown you, O mortal man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you. To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with the Lord your God.’
7. The Bible will show you what real love is all about
John 15:12-13: ‘My command is this. Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.’
8. The Bible will give you guidance and direction
Psalm 119:105: ‘Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path’
9. The Bible will give you strength in time of trouble
Psalm 119:114: ‘You are my refuge and my shield. I have put my hope in your Word.’
10. The Bible will keep you pure in an evil world
Psalm 119:9: ‘How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your Word.’
11. The Bible will bring you great blessing
Psalm 1:1-3: ‘Blessed is the one…whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.’
12. The Bible will reveal Jesus to you
John 5:39: ‘These are the very Scriptures that testify about me.’
Jesus teaches us how in Matthew 6:5-15. We encourage you to follow this example of prayer in your devotional time.
Our Father in Heaven - Thank God that you can call Him Father through grace. Thank God that as a son or daughter of God you are an heir of His promises.
Hallowed be your name - Hallow means to set apart, praise and adore. In Psalm 86:12 it says we should glorify the names of God. We should pray and apply the truths that the Lord is righteousness, He sanctifies, is peace, is there, He heals, provides, is your banner and shepherd.
Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as in heaven - Pray that God’s rule of righteousness, peace,
provision and healing will powerfully increase in your life, home, church, work, friends, nation and world.
Give us today our daily bread - God gives good things to you. Check there is nothing that will hinder God’s supply line such as disobedience. Believe it is God’s will to prosper you, be specific in your requests and don’t give up!
Forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors - Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you anything you have done which may offend God. Ask God to forgive you and receive His forgiveness. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you if you are holding a grudge against anyone and forgive them too.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil - Pray for specific areas where you face temptation and understand that you have been given power to overcome. Also ask for God’s protection around you.
Yours is the Kingdom, the power and the glory forever. Amen - God reigns over everything. Praise Him for who He is, what He’s done and what He will do. Begin each new day with boldness and strength.
1. FIND A QUIET PLACE
A devotional is time between you and God. Find somewhere without distraction where you can maximise this time alone with Him.
2.BEGIN WITH WORSHIP
Praise, worship andwelcome the Holy Spirit. Focus on who God is before anything else. You may want to keep worship music on for the rest of your devotional.
3. READ TO UNDERSTAND
Read the Bible in a version you can understand.
Reading in the context it was written is important to understand what the original meaning was.
4. CONSIDER THE CONTEXT
What is going on ‘behind the message’? When in
history was it written? Why was it written? Who wrote it? What is the message all about?
5. DIGEST THE CONTENT
Don’t just read it, think about it. What are the
verses actually saying? How do they compare
to other Scriptures you know?
6. APPLY THE TEACHING
How is the daily reading relevant to you? How do you need to change? Make a declaration of how it applies to you.
7. READ COMMENTARIES
It may be helpful to read notes from Bible commentaries and devotionals from respected Christian leaders who can help apply the Word of God.
8. MEMORISE SCRIPTURES
Always be prepared to use the Word of God to help you succeed in your daily life and overcome
every challenge.
10. WRITE NOTES
Get a notebook (paper or digital!) and write a brief summary of what God has said to you. Refer back to it and implement every day.
9. SPEAK WITH GOD
Prayer is powerful! Always use the outline of the Lord’s Prayer, and be amazed by what God reveals to you.
